Introduction
In 2023, the leading car models in Spain were Dacia Sandero, Seat Arona, and Peugeot 2008. Notably, Spanish consumers displayed a preference for utility-type vehicles. This trend is evident in the Top 10 list, which includes models like Toyota C-HR, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Seat Ibiza, and Opel Corsa.
As of October 4, the Spanish Automobile Manufacturers Association (ANFAC) reported a 2.3% growth in passenger car registrations, totaling 68,803 units in September 2023 compared to the same month in 2022.
Sales stats overview
As of August 2023, the Dacia Sandero secured its position as the best-selling car with an impressive 18,283 sales, marking a remarkable increase of 37.9%. Following closely is the Seat Arona with 16,825 sales (+26.0%). The Peugeot 2008 clinched the third spot with 13,550 new registrations, reflecting a substantial 23.4% surge in year-on-year sales.
The Toyota C-HR climbed two positions to claim the fourth spot with 13,397 sales (+16.1%). It was trailed by the Toyota Corolla with 12,785 units sold (+3.9%), the Kia Sportage - up by 5 spots - securing 12,663 sales (+33.5%), and the Hyundai Tucson – which fell by 6 spots - recording 12,229 sales (-20.9%).
Securing the eighth position is the Fiat 500, boasting 11,601 sales (+13.5%), followed closely by the Seat Ibiza with 11,556 units sold (+31.6%). Finally, closing the top 10 is the Opel Corsa with 11,554 new registrations, exhibiting a substantial 35.2% increase in sales.
Following the onset of the pandemic, sales of passenger cars in 2021 showed minimal growth, with 859,000 sales reported, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.9%. However, 2022 witnessed a further decline, experiencing a 4.5% decrease in year-on-year sales.
Although kicking off 2023 with a remarkable surge of over 50% in January, the market is bracing for challenging factors that are likely to dampen demand. Primarily, the prevailing European sentiment is nudging consumers towards Electric Vehicles (EVs), an option considerably more expensive for the Spanish market. Additionally, the global automotive landscape grappled with disruptions in supply chains throughout the past year, chiefly due to a shortage of raw materials for microchips. Consequently, manufacturers have been compelled to raise prices across the board.
Rankings
In terms of specific models, the Dacia Sandero (-1.4%) clinches its 7th victory in the last 10 months, maintaining its dominance. Moreover, it extends its lead in year-to-date sales over the second-place contender, the Seat Arona, to just under 700 sales. The Kia Sportage experiences a significant surge (+62%), ascending 10 positions since June to secure the #2 spot overall, claiming a 2.3% share. Following closely are the Peugeot 2008 (-4.3%) and Toyota Corolla (+55.7%), positioned at #3 and #4, respectively, with the Corolla climbing an impressive 7 ranks from the previous month. Despite dropping two spots since June, the MG ZS (+327.6%) retains an impressive 6th place, commanding a 2% share. Notably, it has risen to #18 in year-to-date rankings, a significant improvement from its position at #50 in the Full Year 2022. In a remarkable turnaround, the Renault Clio (+652.6%) secures the #10 spot overall, compensating for a notably challenging performance in the same period last year. Additionally, the Toyota C-HR (+25.8%) exhibits outstanding performance, making its mark in the rankings.
Dacia Sandero
With a total of 24,047 units sold, the Dacia Sandero showcases an impressive performance. Notably, it surpasses the Seat León by just under three hundred units, solidifying its position as the market leader among private customers, especially in a year marked by reduced sales to companies. The 'Stepway' crossover version emerges as the best-selling variant within its range. Additionally, 2021 witnessed the introduction of a new generation for the Sandero, setting the stage for an intense battle to maintain its leadership position in the market.
Seat Arona
The Arona, the primary urban SUV and the second in the SUV category, has now claimed the top position as the brand's best-selling small vehicle, replacing the Ibiza. Despite a smaller range without diesel engine options, the Arona sustains its appeal and dominates a sector that is progressively gaining significance in the market. There are plans to refresh its image in 2024 and potentially introduce additional eco-friendly options to complement its existing petrol engine.
Kia Sportage
Kia's compact crossover SUV, the Sportage, faces strong competition from the top-selling models in its class such as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Toyota RAV4. However, given the abundance of compact SUVs across various automaker lineups, the Sportage sometimes struggles to stand out in the eyes of many potential buyers.
The introduction of the 2023 Sportage, following a complete redesign that enhances almost every aspect, is expected to garner more favorable attention. Noteworthy features of the 2023 model include spacious and comfortable seating, increased cargo capacity, an extensive array of the latest technological advancements, and notable off-road capabilities. As a bonus, the 2023 Sportage is backed by Kia's renowned industry-leading warranty.
Peugeot 2008
the 3008 relinquishes its brand leadership to the 2008. Nonetheless, it continues to be a highly favored choice within its class. Notably, new versions with zero emissions label and a soon-to-be-launched, uncomplicated yet impactful aesthetic makeover are anticipated to further enhance its appeal.
Renault Clio
Even with the transition to a new generation, the Clio retains its essence and experiences a surge in sales. This growth can be attributed to the introduction of a hybrid version with an eco-friendly label, offered at an enticing price point. The model has elevated its quality and overall presence, appealing not only to individual buyers but also gaining traction among a significant number of companies.
Toyota C-HR
Although the seating position in the C-HR doesn't reach the heights of a Peugeot 2008, it still provides a commanding view, aided by small triangular windows at the base of the pillars. The precisely calibrated controls and seamlessly functioning CVT automatic gearbox contribute to a relaxed and comfortable experience while navigating the urban environment.
